Global Health Program

Letter of Inquiry or Request for Proposal?
The foundation's Global Health program accepts funding requests in two ways: through letters of inquiry (LOIs) and requests for proposals (RFPs).
Definitions:
Letter of Inquiry (LOI)While we do not accept unsolicited full grant proposals, many of our program areas do review LOI’s. An LOI is a brief summary of your proposed project including key details and an estimated project budget. LOI’s are reviewed on a continual basis by foundation staff. If your LOI is chosen for further consideration you will be asked to submit a full proposal for review.
Request for Proposal (RFP)The foundation periodically issues RFP’s. An RFP is a solicitation for proposals or letters of inquiry to address specific elements of our strategic plan in targeted areas of global health.
Grantmaking Areas Funded Primarily Through Letters of Inquiry (LOIs)
Priority Diseases and Conditions: Projects focused on the diseases and health conditions that represent the greatest health burden in the developing world: acute lower respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS, acute diarrheal illness, vaccine-preventable diseases, malaria, tuberculosis, nutrition, reproductive and maternal health, and child health.
Other Health Conditions: Projects focused on diseases that have a disproportionate impact in the developing world but are less prevalent than the priority conditions noted above: helminthic infections, sexually transmitted infections other than HIV, trypanosomiasis and other kinetoplastid diseases, human papillomavirus, and other lower-burden diseases.
Critical Enabling Strategies: Initiatives to increase public awareness of global health and mobilize resources; strengthen public health leadership; improve the collection and use of data and evidence for global health decision-making; and improve the delivery of, and demand for, key health products and interventions (see also Priority Diseases and Conditions for disease-specific initiatives).
Grantmaking Areas Funded Through Requests for Proposals (RFPs) Only
Critical Enabling Technologies: Focused investments in science and technology to achieve fundamental scientific breakthroughs, find new platforms for diagnostics, and conduct targeted cellular and molecular studies to help develop new health tools.
Community Health Solutions: One-time grants to implement community-based, short-term initiatives related to the foundation’s priority diseases and conditions.
Emergency Relief: Relief for natural and man-made disasters.http://www.gatesfoundation.org/GlobalHealth/Grantseekers/HowToApply/LOI_RFP.htm

You can find or post RFPs at the RFP Database. The site has a "Health & Human Services" section for projects matching this topic.
